"Music is the cup that holds the wine of silence. Sound is that cup, but empty. Noise is that cup, but broken.”

Robert Fripp

Reuben Sutherland, half of this duo, is a british VJ, specialised in animation who used to direct commercials as well music videos for Flying Nun Records and bands as Röysksopp.
Dan Hayhurst is in charge of the music, and their project is supported by the label Ana Ott.

Wasl

وصل

http://waslmusic.weebly.com/

Wasl means "meeting", "connection" in Arabic language.
Around combination of lyrics from the two parts of the Arab world by Hassan Najmi (Rabat - Maroc) and Salman Masalha (Jerusalem), this amazing trio WASL is composed by Kamilya Jubran (voice and oud), Werner Hasler (trumpet and electronics) & Sarah Murcia (acoustic bass).

Aleph

"Aleph" (1956-1966) is the unique movie directed by the american artist Wallace Berman (1926-1976).

Involved in the 50s in the "beat artistic scene", Wallace Berman has been called the "father" of assemblage art. He created "Verifax collages", which consist of photocopies of images from magazines and newspapers, mounted onto a flat surface in a collage fashion, mixed with occasional solid areas of acrylic paint.
He is well known for his magazine "Semina" which consisted of photographs, texts, drawings, images and poetry by writers Michael McLure, Charles Bukowski, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jean Cocteau and other ones.

Originally, the "Aleph" movie is silent, but this version is scored by Mellankeffekt.

with probably some figures (poets, singers ...) of the Beat Generation to identify.
Thanks for response' elements!

Blueblut

http://www.blueblut.net/

Blueblut is an austrian band formed in 2013 by the american artist Pamelia Stickney, who plays theremin with Mark Holub on drums  & Chris Janka on guitar.

Pamelia Stickney is a famous theremin's player who use to play alone or in combination with other performers.
Her background as a jazz musician on the upright bass has led to develop a "walking bass" theremin technique.
With her rough way of playing, when necessary, Pamelia Stickney can compete with other female virtuosas who play this magical instrument, as Dorit Chrysler or Pamela Kurstin, her double under heteronym <> She published CDs and performs from 1999.

Hallelujah

An instrumental version of this splendid song written by Leonard Cohen who left our world last night.

played by Chris Long & David Coulter at Tapage Club - Paris October 2001

Another sung version with Samm Bennett here

"Hallelujah"

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who has seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Variophone

The "Variophone" - or "Automated Paper Sound with soundtracks in both transversal and intensive form" -  was invented by Evgeny Sholpo in 1930 at Alexander Shorin's Central Laboratory of Wire Communication in Leningrad. In May 1930 Sholpo applied for a patent on a “method and device for the production of a periodic sound track on film". It was a continuation of research that Sholpo had been conducting since the 1910s when he was working on performer-less music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCjEOFOoLkU

The first version of the instrument was built with assistance from the composer Georgy Rimsky-Korsakov (grandson of the famous composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov) in 1931 at Lenfilm Studios.
The first soundtrack they did was for the short propaganda film The year 1905 in Bourgeois Satire (director N.I. Galkin, composer V.M. Deshevov).

Sholpo’s method made access easier to varieties of timbres. Unlike Arseny Avraamov, who shot still images of sounds on an animation stand, Sholpo used cardboard disks with circular images of combs with suitably shaped cogs rotating synchronously with a moving filmstrip. The advantages of the Variophone were in its flexible and continuous pitch control and vibrato.

Like a Villain

The Portland classical artist, who performs under the name Like a Villain, is known for her unrehearsed, long-form noise sets, which mix jazzy and operatic vocals with experimental woodwind compositions.

In early 2010, Holland Andrews (her real name) began her solo project behind the alias of Like a Villain. She pulls her influences from notable minimalist composers such as Arvo Pärt, contemporary vocalists including Diamanda Galás, and modern experimental musicians like Björk, and she is heavily influenced by Broadway and opera music. By creating a tapestry of live loops using her voice, clarinet, and glockenspiel, her aim is to emphasize the roots of organic sounds and create an emotional realm of sonic healing and magic.

"With her voice, a clarinet, a glockenspiel, and a loop pedal, Holland Andrews aka "Like a Villain" weaves haunting faerie tales of songs, capable of ethereal beauty and deafening, cathartic discord. Over the past few years, Andrews has established herself as one of the Northwest's most daring and captivating performers. "Great, big sonic constructs that crash through your expectations of what music is supposed to be" - Willamette Week

... à Valparaíso

"... à Valparaiso" (1963) is a superb documentary directed by Joris Ivens on the city of Valparaiso (Chile), its geography, its history and urban development: a remarkable achievement and a superb analysis of the urban phenomenon in which coexist poetry and activism.

Réalisation: Joris Ivens
Textes: Chris Marker
Voix (en français): Roger Pigaut
Musique: Gustavo Becerra

Lea Bertucci

https://soundcloud.com/lea-bertucci

Lea Bertucci is an American sound artist and composer, a real master of spacious atmospheres, and gloomy, contemplative soundscapes, on her trademark combine of physical, open-reel tape and electroacoustic bass clarinet.
Her work often incorporates multi-channel speaker arrays, electroacoustic feedback, extended instrumental/vocal technique, and tape collage. As an instrumentalist, she takes an idiosyncratic approach to the amplification of woodwind instruments, creating organic yet electrified sonic interventions.
